I would say the background looks a little flat (I think maybe one or two simple colors-perhaps with a little texture- would match the simplicity of the girl's smile and design, want to keep her the main focus rather than having too many bright colors behind her take away her focus, especially since her colors are subtle themselves). But her coloring is good, esp. considering done by mouse :)

I see that her shading goes over her outline however. There are several techniques in Photoshop you can use, to color on a new layer and make sure it doesn't go out of that "skin" layer. I can tell you about them if you like :)

Thank you for the help :) I appreciate it.
I see what you mean by the bright colors in the background taking the focus off the main picture.
And please, do tell me about those techniques when you have the time. :hug:

Certainty of death..small chance of success....what are we waiting for?
:iconartisteri:
Sure no problem :) Well like I said, there's a couple ways to do it. It assumes first of all that you're working with layers, that that the lineart is the top layer, and the skin is its own layer, right?

Once you have it that way (and if you don't I can help there too :) ) the first, most straightforward way would be to use the magic wand tool, to select the colored in skin. Then, without deselecting, make a new layer, and color your shadows in there. That way, it won't go over the edges of the skin layer.
It's not a bad method, but it means you have to leave it selected the whole time.

Another way, which is even better, is to use clipping masks. These are sooo helpful and great to use.
Basically, you color the skin tone however you like on its layer, then make a new layer above it that's empty. Click "Cntrl+G" at the same time (or go to "Layers -> Create clipping mask"), and the layer above the skin will be indented and have a little arrow pointing to the skin layer. This effectively means that anything you paint on this clipped layer will only show up on the colored parts of the skin (play around with it).
You can make multiple clipping masks for the same layer, so you can do one for shadow and one for highlight for example.

If it's confusing or it's not working, let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to explain it better.

Def. give it a try :)

Thank you. :)
That is how I use layers. Lineart, Skin, Flats ect.
I'll try these out. I just got PS CS4 like 2 days ago.. so Im still getting used to it.^^;
The clipping mask sounds like fun.;p

:iconartisteri:
No problem. I've been using Photoshop for 9 years... and I'm still getting used to it :P

Let me know how it goes!
:iconxandau:
9 years? Wow. >.< I used Ps Elements 5.0 previously for a year, and I used other free softwares before getting PS. I've been hopping around for like 3 or 4 years. :lol:
:XD: The reason I use a mouse is because my tablet pen ran away...and so I cant use the tablet. ^^;

Aww... well they're all fantastic programs, just really complicated, so loads to learn. I only really use it for specific things, so it's more when I veer out of my comfort zone or can't get something to work that I learn something new. I also like reading up on people's tutorials just to get ideas of how to do things differently.

Also, sorry 'bout the tablet. Couldn't you order a new pen? Surely that wouldn't be too expensive, would it? :/
:iconxandau:
I've also been recently looking at tuts for PS.
I have been thinking about getting a new pen. For mine its only $30. But.. my mum doesn't exactly know it's gone. :XD:
